At the heart of the Cape Winelands lies Stellenbosch, named after its founder, Governor Simon van der Stel who, on discovering the broad fertile valley of the Eerste Rivier in 1679, realised it was th ideal place to plant vineyards. The early settlers were encouraged to plant oak trees as the oak lined streets bear testimony today, and South African's second oldest town became affectionately known as "Eikestad", town of oaks !

Compared with any other wine district Stellenbosch has the most wine producers and estates. The favourable Mediterranean climate, the excellent soils combined with the best of creative winemaking talent, constantly place Stellenbosch in the top ranks when it comes to winning awards for its wines and as champion wine region.
