In 1989 Worcester was declared South Africa's Champion Wine region. Apart from fortified wines, Worcester produces delicate and fruity wines and is the country's most important brandy producing area. Bounded mainly by mountains and bordered by the Robertson district in the east, the Worcester district spreads over a large portion of the Breede River Valley and is only one hour drive from Cape Town. Robertson is less than two hours' drive from the mother city and extends into the lower reaches of the Breede River Valley.
